Keeping your aligners clean is as important as wearing them for the recommended 20-22 hours a day.

Learn why cleaning your aligners matters and how to keep them fresh and clear.

Why it's important to clean your aligners

There are many reasons our team emphasizes the importance of clean your aligners, including:

Avoiding bacteria buildup

When your aligners aren't perfectly clean, invisible bacteria can quickly accumulate. This can cause bad breath and oral health issues.

Preventing plaque accumulation

When you eat carbohydrates, bacteria in your mouth and on your aligners can turn into plaque. This sticky film can attach to your teeth and may lead to tartar and cavities.

Avoiding stains

When your aligners aren't as clean as they should be, stains can quickly change their color. They can take on a milky appearance and become far more visible.

Avoiding direct tooth contact

Your aligners fit snugly over your teeth because they're custom-made for you. If your aligners aren't clean, anything trapped inside them stays in close contact with your enamel, which can quickly lead to damage and decay.

Best ways to keep your aligners clean

Using the right techniques will keep your aligners looking clear and feeling fresh. Our team recommends the following tips:

Rinse frequently

Always rinse your aligners with lukewarm water when removing and replacing them (before and after meals) to prevent dry saliva and plaque buildup.

Soft toothbrush

Gently brush your aligners with a soft toothbrush and a soap we recommend. Avoid applying toothpaste to your aligners as it can scratch their surface.

Soak aligners

Use Invisalign cleaning crystals or a denture cleaner to soak your aligners once a day. This will eliminate lingering bacteria and odors.

Cleaning don'ts

Never rinse your aligners under hot water, as it can cause warping. Stick to lukewarm water instead.

Avoid mouthwash — it can contain dyes that could discolor your aligners. Also, many mouthwashes contain chemicals that can damage your aligners.

When not in use, keep your aligners in their case to protect them from bacteria and damage.
